A Humanistic Approach to AI
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) and humanoid robots are on the rise. As these technologies become more advanced, designing them to interact seamlessly with humans in daily life will be critical. A transactional analysis-inspired architecture could be the key to creating AGIs and androids that feel natural and intuitive for humans.
Transactional analysis is a psychological theory of ego states proposed by Eric Berne in the 1960s. It categorizes human behavior and cognition into three distinct modes:
- Adult: Rational, pragmatic mode
- Child: Curious, playful mode
- Parent: Caregiving, authoritative mode
These ego states align well with how we interact with different people and contexts — acting nurturing as a parent, making calculated decisions as an adult, or being creative and explorative like a child.
